1.1. My VPS

Recently, I decided (again) to maintain a VPS for different projects. After some invesigations I found an attractive product at netcup GmbH. I wanted a European provider with flexible DNS configuration and reasonable prices.

I selected an ARM64 based system. ARM64 based systems provide high performance at low energy consumption. Additionally those systems are offered with larger main memory and SSD compared to AMD64 based VPS at the same price.

The selected product is called VPS ARM G11 which has following properties:

  • Location: Vienna, Austria (cheaper than Nuremberg, Germany)
  • KVM based virtualization
  • 6 vCores (ARM64)
  • 8 GB DDR4 ECC RAM
  • 256 GB NVMe
  • 2.5 GbE network connection
  • IPv4 address inclusive
  • IPv6 /64-Netz
  • unlimited network traffic

The provisioning took only some minutes with a pre-installed Debian 12 OS. Debian is my preferred Linux distribution, so no need for me to change.

In case another Linux distribution is desired, the user can upload an ISO image for installation. Unfortunately for ARM64 architecture netcup is not offering direct available alternative installation images.
